The DHT funds scientists to implement existing techniques and develop new methods which are more human-relevant and replace animal experiments. Grants are awarded to scientists in universities, hospitals and research organisations following a rigorous peer-reviewed selection procedure. Only those projects with the highest scientific calibre and the best potential for the replacement of animals will be awarded funding. Relying solely on charitable donations and legacies, the DHT funds advanced medical research across the UK into diverse areas including neurological disorders, cancer, autoimmune diseases, genetic disorders and infectious diseases amongst others, all without animal suffering. Through promotion and education we encourage the wider adoption of replacement techniques. The DHT has become an expert in non-animal research and is consulted internationally for its expertise in replacement research methods by scientists, governments, academia, animal welfare organisations and industry.
