Emmaus: the homeless charity that works
Emmaus helps homeless men and women to build new lives by offering a home and meaningful work in a secure and supportive environment. When they come to live in an Emmaus Community, Companions, as residents are known, sign off primary benefits and work full time on the Community social enterprise, renovating and re-selling donated furniture. The income from the business supports the Community financially, with any surplus used to help others in need.
James lost his home when his marriage broke down. He had enjoyed his job in the construction industry but was unable to find work during the economic downturn. Suffering from depression, he found himself sleeping in night shelters and spending his days on the streets. Then he came to Emmaus Colchester, and his life began to change for the better. He says, “Emmaus helps you look to the future not just at where you are now. I like the idea that you're a community and that you all look after each other. We've all been as low as you can go but now all we can do is go upwards. It's about building yourself back up again to being a person."
There are currently 19 Emmaus Communities throughout the UK that are offering people like James the help and support they need to turn their lives around. However, there are still many more homeless people who do not yet have this opportunity, which is why we need your support.
Why choose Emmaus
By taking part in the Gold Challenge for Emmaus, you will be helping to give formerly homeless people the chance to leave the streets for good. Once they are established, Emmaus Communities aim to become financially self-sufficient through their social enterprise businesses reselling donated furniture. So your support will help build Communities that can offer homeless people the opportunity to transform their lives for years and decades to come.
When you join the Emmaus Gold Challenge, you will be participating alongside individuals and teams from across the Emmaus movement - Companions, staff members, volunteers, supporters - who are all getting involved to make a positive contribution to the life of their Emmaus Community or Group.
