Family Action

Supporting families since 1869

Family Action has been a leading provider of services to disadvantaged and socially isolated families since 1869. Based in 100 locations across England, we work with over 45,000 vulnerable families and children a year.

Family Action tackles some of the most complex and difficult issues facing families today, including domestic abuse, mental health and financial hardship.

These issues have a huge impact on the health, wellbeing and development of children, and on relationships within the family. Family Action works with whole families to help them find solutions to problems, no matter how difficult, so that they become safer, stronger and more optimistic about their future.

Through a range of our services, Family Action is able to plug the gap through which families with complex needs often fall, keeping children safe while addressing their long term needs. Some of the services we provide include: Young Carers support groups, family support, parental mental health support, and projects working with mothers suffering from post natal depression.

As well as providing on the ground support, Family Action is committed to using its experience as a frontline service provider to campaign for change that will benefit other families in similar situations.

Why choose Family Action

By taking on the Gold Challenge for Family Action, you will be helping to ensure we can support more children and families in crisis. One group of children we support is Young Carers.

Family Action's nine Young Carers services provide one-to-one counselling sessions and group activities for children sometimes as young as 6 years old. The one-to-one sessions help children to manage their sometimes-overwhelming emotions, whilst the group activities mean they can enjoy themselves away from their caring responsibilities, and be a child for a few hours.

This is a story from one of our Young Carers:

Amy (15) was a carer to her mother who was an alcoholic and who would frequently disappear leaving Amy and her brother to cope alone at home. Due to her family situation Amy experienced severe emotional impact and struggled to stay in school.

Family Action's Young Carers programme gave Amy one to one support, helping her to off-load some of her worries which helped her attendance at school and she has now succeeded in passing 8 GCSEs.

When Amy's mum left the rented family home without warning and removed her name from all financial obligations, Family Action helped Amy claim all the appropriate benefits, helped with budgeting and liaising with the various agencies to ensure Amy and her brother didn't become homeless.
