Self Unlimited makes a direct positive difference in the lives of people with learning disabilities. Your vital support will help us ensure people with learning disabilities continue to be supported to achieve their potential and have more choice and independence.
Founded in 1966 (when we were known as C.A.R.E), our charity's mission is to support people with learning disabilities by maximising life choices. Our vision is that through our efforts, the people who turn to us for support are enabled to lead fulfilling, safe and healthy lives. Self Unlimited has grown to be recognised as providing extremely high quality care to the people whom we support. We have many services and projects across the country that offer a comprehensive network of housing, training and specialised support services to enable people with learning disabilities to live a fulfilled life at the heart of society. We aim to assist people to live successfully as active citizens in their local communities and take more control of, and have more choice in their own lives. We strive to provide an environment that encourages self-belief and promotes self- esteem, enabling the people we support to participate equally, challenging and overcoming the disadvantages they face. The level of support we provide ranges from 24 hour care to a few hours of support each week, always tailored to meet the needs of the individual. We believe that people should have no boundaries to their achievements, other than those they set themselves. The current economic climate is extremely challenging for those most vulnerable in society and in need of social care. Government cutbacks coupled with economic recession means that charities such as ourselves are having to provide more for less, and find additional sources of voluntary donations to continue to provide quality additional support that isn't available through statutory funding, and that makes all the difference to a vulnerable person's life. Self Unlimited relies on the generosity of its' supporters to raise vital funds to help it to continue to positively transform the lives of people with a learning disability. Self Unlimited will give you all the support you need to take on your challenge(s). By supporting us you can help a service or project close to you. There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK. Like everyone, they are individuals who want different things in life and need different levels of support. However, less than 1 in 5 people with a learning disability work (compared with 1 in 2 disabled people generally), but we know that at least 65% of people with a learning disability want to work. Of those people with a learning disability who do work, most only work part-time and are low paid. Only 1 in 3 people with a learning disability take part in some form of education or training. We know that amongst the people that Self Unlimited supports and their families and carers, access to social activities, leisure and recreational activities and employment opportunities are seen as a priority. Support to understand and access these choices are high on the agenda of the people we support.
